PiKA retrieves course record from CIA by breaking 2:10 minute barrier for the first time ever. We have held the record in all but 3 years since 1967.

Rich Connors wrote... "In 1983, we set the record (probably my proudest moment as a Pike!!!) by pushing the B-Team buggy (Bullet) on day two. We qualified with Godzilla on day one and the B-Team qualified with Bullet. Bullet went head to head with Beta A and we had our B-Team on the course. Then immediately before the race started, we had the A-team run out. Bullet had severely out-rolled Godzilla on the first day, so we made the decision to switch buggies. It turned out that Beta A and Bullet crashed into each other. The (Sweepstakes) chairman decided that we would each run solo to determine the winner. So...the A-team (Saxton-Haywood-Machernis-Connors-Gens) pushed Bullet to the record As I said, it was my highlight from my four years at CMU."

After the first day PiKA A was in 1st place with 2:11.9 followed by Beta A with 2:12.0. PiKA B held 4th place. At the time 1st place would have rolled against 4th place but because of a rule that you cannot roll against yourself, Beta A rolled against PiKA B (sort of) and PiKA A rolled against CIA A.

In the heat with Beta A against Bullet with the A-Team pushers swapped in at the last second, Beta beat us up Hill 1. Bullet trailed Beta through freeroll and attempted to pass after the turn. The buggies had lost sight of each other and collided. Each were granted a reroll. During that heat Beta was probably unaware that we had switched push teams. They found out in the next heat when CIA beat out Godzilla and our B-Team pushers. The record was set in our reroll with the A-Team pushing Bullet. Beta A also turned in an impressive time beating the prior record but, alas, it wasn't good enough.

Results: Men's 1st Place, 5th Place and 6th Place

Course Record: PiKA 2:09.0 (taking the record back from CIA)
